NEWBIE TIP

Even if you've made your photos and graphics as small as possible, sometimes there's no getting around slow download times. Be nice to your site visitors: add image descriptions that tell them what images will soon appear. To do this, just right-click the image and select Properties -- Image. On the General tab, type a description of your image in the Description area. Now users will see that text before the image loads. Some browsers also use this as "hover text" -- the description that pops up when you rest your mouse over the picture.

SAVVY USER'S TIP

So you've invited your site visitors to ask questions by creating an email link. Good idea -- but do you ever get emails that are either hard to understand or just plain off topic? Well, start using the Form Web Gem. With the Form Web Gem, you can ask questions and get answers back from your users in a structured, easy-to-read format.

Check out how Eagle Life Ministries uses the Form Web Gem to get users to subscribe to their newsletter -- or see the Web Gem Spotlight in this issue for more form ideas.

Have a tip you think others would like to see? Submit your tip and you could win fame, fortune, or maybe the world-famous Trellix t-shirt.

Trellix Web book is on the way
It's always been important to us to make publishing a web site as easy as possible -- and we like to think we've done a pretty good job of that in our software. Now there's a whole new way to get help creating a web site: the Trellix Web Web Site Creation Kit. This 300 page, softcover book will be available in mid-December and covers the complete process, from idea generation to publication to ongoing care and feeding. It even comes with a Trellix Web 2.7 CD, which makes it an excellent gift for anyone who's been planning on creating a site but hasn't gotten around to it.

Get a sneak peek on the Trellix Cafe: we've made Chapter Six available as a .pdf. In it you'll find out all the best ways to promote your site.

Support Central
Believe it or not, we are now officially in the holiday season. Time to update a family tradition: instead of your annual paper newsletter, why not put up a web site to tell your family and friends what you've been up to? We've made it easy. Just download this Trellix document, edit, publish and you're done! Now your only problem is, what size gloves should you buy Aunt Agnes? Sorry, we can't help you there.
Dan's Corner
Well Dan's still busy explaining how to design better ballots, so take a look at our guest column this week: David H. Freeman from inc.com explains how online auctions aren't just for collectibles anymore. They're selling everything from moving services to real estate. See how that's starting to change the online landscape.

Dan Bricklin, co-inventor of the first electronic spreadsheet, is the founder and Chief Technical Officer of Trellix.

Web Gem Spotlight
As we mentioned earlier, forms can be a great addition to your web site. The main idea is to help your visitors give you exactly the information you want or need from them -- in a much cleaner format than a simple email. Businesses learn this lesson quickly: you'll be much more likely to get the information you need to answer a customer's question or take their order if you use the Form Web Gem to create separate input boxes for Name, Address, Model # -- whatever the essential details are.

But forms aren't just for businesses. Use them on your band site to gather ideas for the name of your next album, on a family site to ask what people's favorite family recipe is -- on any site where you want to make it easy for readers to answer a question or give their feedback, the Form Web Gem can help get the conversation flowing.

Trellix Web Builders' Voices
"I have a wide variety of interests and Trellix Web has allowed me to build, deploy and maintain a web site while working at a full time job. People cannot believe that [my company] idea247 does not have at least 50 elves working in the background! My advice to new users is "Beware the Trellix Web addiction!" I wish I had more time 'cause there's so much more I could do with Trellix - like display my photography and art work. Trellix Rules... and that's my final answer!"
-- Ofunne Obiamiwe

"More people need to know how fun and easy it is to build a site with Trellix!"
-- Anna Maria Rivera

"Our first Trellix Web Site has recently gone 'live'. Considering we have only limited HTML and Web Design experience the results are astounding, proof, if any were needed, that Trellix Web is truly a first class product. We are particularly pleased with the way you can 'fine-tune' Trellix Web with your own HTML code, we used this facility to include two response forms."
-- Martin Boughton
