NEWBIE TIP

Regular readers of this newsletter have heard about the benefits of using tables for all kinds of cool effects. Here are a couple of user sites that show exactly what we've been talking about -- take a look and see what ideas you come up with.

Liverpool Online uses tables to give their pages a professional and uniform look.

Eagle Life Ministries uses several single cell tables to highlight text on this page.
Want to learn some of the tricks to using tables? We'll show you.

SAVVY USER'S TIP

You know that if you want music on one web page, you can use the "Sound on Your Page" Web Gem. But did you know you can have music that plays continuously as long as someone's visiting your web site? You'll need to use a combination of the "Build Your Own Web Gem" and a container page to open a new browser window that plays your chosen sound. The effect is cool -- your visitors will love it!

We've put together step-by-step instructions in the Cafe on how to add this effect to your site.

Have a tip you think others would like to see? Submit your tip and you could win fame, fortune, or maybe the world-famous Trellix t-shirt.

Trellix Web: Web Site Creation Kit is here!
The new Trellix Web book we told you about was released December 12. It's helpful whether you're a beginner or an expert, but don't take our word for it -- check out Cafe member JuleyK's review for the inside scoop. Take a look at what readers say, order it today from any major online bookseller, or find out more -- all on the Trellix Cafe.

New graphics in the Cafe
One thing we're learning about Trellix Web users -- you want more graphics. So we're responding -- we've recently added over a thousand jpegs from Photos to Go to the Cafe graphics directory. We're also improving the loading time on those pages by reducing the file size of the thumbnail images. Take a look, we bet you'll find something that would be a good addition to your site. (And by the way -- you'll need to register for the Cafe if you're not already a member.)

Support Central
Ask and ye shall receive
We're always adding new content to the Trellix Cafe -- for example, new FAQs. We listen to the questions we get through chat, discussion boards, and email, and add new FAQs that address your most common concerns. You'll find tons of great ideas, from creating thumbnails to troubleshooting publishing problems to making links that pop open new browser windows -- as well as many of the tips used here in Refresh. Find the answers you need in the FAQs.
Dan's Corner
With many of you frantically creating holiday web sites loaded with photos, Dan figured it was a good time to remind you about cropping images. Cropping can help minimize page load time, show more details, and improve the composition. Check it out.

Dan Bricklin, co-inventor of the first electronic spreadsheet, is the founder and Chief Technical Officer of Trellix.

Sites of the Week

Noah Gordon Books

Fans of author Noah Gordon can visit this site to find out more about his stories, see where he'll be appearing, or order copies of his books from online retailers. Check out the photo bio for another example of a very effective design you can create with tables.

Kromwijk Family Site

Kromwijk family site screen shot
One of the most common reasons people build web sites is to share their family photos -- but not many families have photos that go back to the 1920s like this one does. The simple design of their site helps focus the viewer on the pictures that trace this family from Holland to Australia, and the frameless splash page helps search engines find their site.

Web Gem Spotlight
MapQuest gets people where they're going
To many people, the holiday season = party time. Whether it's a quiet family get-together or a big New Year's blowout, an invitation web site can make sure your guests get all the details on your party. Using the MapQuest Web Gem, you can provide people with an exact map of where your gathering takes place -- and they can even get step-by-step directions by inputting their addresses.

Of course, there are plenty of other uses for the MapQuest Web Gem: showing customers the location of your business, pinpointing where your vacation photos were taken, or giving directions to a new home. Try it yourself -- it's always a big hit with visitors.
